McG under the weather and more gig dilemmas

McG in his leaning Buddha pose :- poor thing
he's been on a diet since he was 6 months old
when he hit a stone - that was over 13 years ago.
He makes Bagpus look lively but we love him....

McG has been under the weather for the last couple of days. It all started when I heard a cat fight outside, thinking nothing of it as our two are so placid that it's just not what they do - after all that involves effort. I looked across at Mischief who was stationed on in her normal position.
Mischief showing her normal distain for everything...

McG was not about but whenever we think he has gone wandering he turns up in a cupboard (favourite place is the back of the airing cupboard) or pops (OK, flops) out of a box. In the last few months he has had a fixation on getting into the downstairs lavatory. He never stays there for long, I think it's to do with not liking closed doors and that one is normally shut.

A few minutes later McG sprung (or as “sprungy” as an aging overweight cat can manage through a now tight-fitting cat flap) into the utility room and proceeded to swagger (not easy for a cat with a large underbelly and short legs to carry off) through the kitchen, without saying hello and sauntered off upstairs. I immediately assumed he had backed the right cat in the fight and made the feline version of a financial killing.
Considering he's old, over weight and ginger
he can be quite cute. Does this mean there is
hope for all of us?

A couple of hours later Mrs B came home and went up stairs. The quiet of the night was disturbed by a screech that made me think the cat fight had started up again. Turns out is was a distraught Mrs B calling me upstairs as something was up with McG. I hurried up and found him on the now blood splattered bed spread looking very sorry for himself. A quick check showed that the wounds were only superficial but, for a cat who has religiously avoided any form of exercise that did not involve sleeping or hunting down a warm spot to sleep for 14 years, he was stiffening up nicely. We bathed his wounds in warm salty water (you can imagine how well that went down) and monitored him for a few days.
How did I not notice McG has lost an ear

His loss of appetite lasted precisely one meal, after which he was well on the road to recovery.
McG looking perkier, thankfuly his ear had
just popped out for a breath of fresh air...

Concert: to go or not to go
Not going - I failed to get tickets for a Vampire Weekend concert last week, when they went on pre-sale - by the time I found out about the concert, the pre-sale was over.

Going - I then found that the tickets were going on general sale, so waited for the site to activate.

Not going – The link never did open, the tickets had all gone in the pre-sale - Would have been nice if they had said so on the site rather than putting up a notice saying tickets went on sale at 9am. It was only when I called up to find out what was happening did they pass on this distressing, but valuable, nugget of information....Arrrggghhhh.

Going - Found out that Mrs B really wanted to see them so found some tickets on “Seatwave”, a form of legalised black-market for tickets

Might not be going - Two days before the gig and no sign of the tickets I had bought. I called up Seatwave, who promised to contact the seller and call me back in 20 minutes.

Not going - A couple of hours later, I called back to find out what was going on.

Seatwave - Sorry did we not get back to you. The seller forgot to send the tickets so we can't get them to you. We will give you a full refund...”

Me :- ” Well that's just great, what sort of a shoddy service are you running? So next time I want to park my money somewhere for a week I know where to come…Only lets face it I don’t think there will be a next time….”

Might be going - An hour later I get a phone call – “Hi. It’s Seat wave here. We’ve worked out a way of getting the tickets to you….”

Will be going – Big UPC envelope arrives on my desk at work with tickets actually inside the envelope.

Little victory dance round the office to strange looks from fellow workers – but hey, they’ve seen worse.

Arrived in London and parked practically in the venue. I had brought the beast with me but looking at the security on the door who were practically body searching everyone. I’ve seen Berlin Masseuse do a less intrusive job. I was in two minds on whether to attempt to smuggle (now that’s a joke, that would be like going to the zoo and trying to walk out with an elephant under my jacket*) the camera in. I decided that since ElleGee was so close if they didn’t let me in with the beast I could easily drop it off. I felt attempting to try and hide the camera was not the best course of action and went for plan B, have it out in plain site and attempt to brazen it out.

* Incidentally if you do manage to sneak an elephant out, you can count on it being a very expensive date. They eat rather a lot and I suspect you might need to purchase a number of Cinema tickets. Don't even think about trying to fly them anywhere as I believe even Jumbos have a no Elephant rule these days. Don't blame me I don't make up the rules...

The huge security guard asked me to open the camera case.

Gulp

I unzipped it

He peered in

He looked at me

He peered back in

I said nothing

He peered at it again

I held my nerve

Burley security guard - “You’re not going to use it are you?”

I said nothing

He peered a final time

Tension mounted

His eyes rolled to the sky and said rather mechanically “If you get caught using it, you will probably be asked to leave.”

‘Probably’ - sounded like excellent odds to me.

I’ve not been to Kings College Student Union before. I can report that with its capacity of just over 600, it’s a fantastic venue. With the floor already heaving and Mrs B not looking forward to being pushed around with little or no view, we spotted some stairs and made our way up to a balcony. Here we found a couple of stools and an unrestricted view of the stage, perfect. The heavy drinkers amongst you will be pleased to note that there was a bar up there with student union prices. Where were you?

The best description of Vampire Weekend’s music that I have heard is "Upper West Side Soweto", with the influence of African pop and classical music making them fairly unique at the moment. There are obvious shades of Paul Simon during his Graceland period. The band are tight - No I’m not moaning that they didn’t buy us drinks all night, for the record they didn’t, but tight as a musical unit.

It's off to see Franz Ferdinand at the Brixton Acadamy tonight - hope to get more pictures for next week. Not sure I will get the Beast in, but who knows...

Recent things we wish we had not said – The printable ones anyway

Obsession
I was reading through the various blogs and making comments when Mrs B turned to me, quite the event considering she was watching Strictly come Dancing which normally takes 125% of her concentration:

Mrs B - ”Are you reading blogs again? You're obsessed....”

Me - Sorry, Mrs B, but exactly how many episodes of Strictly Come Dancing 2 is that you are in the middle of watching?

Mrs B’s reply was a rather sheepish grin….

An almost perfect sense of direction
As we came out of Warren Street station making for Tottenham Court Road, I took one look around and set off.

Mrs B - “How do you know where you are going?”

Me - “Natural sense of direction I guess!”

Mrs B - “That's very impressive....but isn't that Tottenham Court Road over there?" showing me, rather vindictively, a sign pointing in the opposite direction.

Me - “Grrr”

Anyone else want to step up to the plate and admit to things they wish they had not said recently?

Hatfield Forest
Thought you might like some more autumn shots to to end with. Till next week, have a good one.
When Geese go bad - Distressing reports have
reached the BlackLOG that a goose has been seen
flashing in Hatfield Forest

Am I being fussy or are the autumn colours still a bit muted?

What are you still doing here go outand enjoy yourself ....But only after you have left a comment.... You know you want to

  1. I agree about the autumn colours still being a bit muted. It's nearly November, would they ever get a move on! About the things I wish I'd never said...I was walking through the park with a friend when I noticed a tree which had green leaves on one side and red, orange and yellow leaves on the other side.'That poor tree must be so confused' I said. My friend was looking at me mighty strangely I can tell ya lol :)

  2. How many cinema seats would an elephant take up? To save money you could go for a CACTUS night!

As far as the leaves go, give it another 2 weeks and we can pretend we're living in the middle of New England.

  4. Smileyfreak Where is your friends sense of humour? That was a brilliant line.

My big fear is that like avocados which go
    unripe,
    unripe,
    unripe,
    ripe no wait rotten.
The leaves will drop seconds after they turn spectacular and that will be in the middle of the night.

  5. IMO Depending on the particular elephant I would guess between 8 to 12. – Don’t put them in the center though as they might block the film projection....

If those leaves don't hang on for another two weeks, I'm sending McG around to sit on you....

Kathryn over at ‘From the Inside...Out’ blackmailed me into removing the verification by asking almost nicely

  6. Poor McG, he's such a lovely cat. My Meow Meow got into a scrape a couple of nights ago, eye swelled up a little, but it was temp and later that day he was fine. Stories of MM & Co on Life is Just like That...

  9. Poor McG. Although he certainly poses well for the camera, a natural I'd say.

Is it a coincidence you're wearing an elephant polo shirt while trying to smuggle the beast?

    Have a good weekend!

  10. HEY. First of all, I seem to recall asking VERY nicely that you remove word verification. I also seem to recall offering to stand in front of you and kill the spambots a-la Charlie's-Angels style. You didn't seem to have a problem with this arrangement, so you're welcome.

The 35 seconds of concert I heard sounded FAB. That's what you say there, right? Actually, I don't care what you call it. It sounded sweet. THAT'S an American expression...live with it.

I thought for sure McG had come in with a mouse. I know I said I'd bet you $5,000.00, but you knew that was in Twitter-dollars, right? That and three bucks'll buy you a nice piece of pie.
The photo of McG with his paw delicately under his chin as if to say, "Who...me? Yes, I know I'm the 'Cat's Meow'..." is beyond cute. Do you think he knows how cute he is? Mischief is scary and looks like he wants to beat the crap out of something.
The Beast looks like something that started out as a camera and morphed into something...abnormal. Almost like those guys with ten million piercings all over their faces? With that much lens on a camera, I thought I'd see the nose hairs on Koenig. Good shots, though.
As for being kicked out of InsideOut (yes, I've made it to Ron's place...and YES, I am EVERYWHERE), you are bound by a ten year iron-clad lease. you're also required to shovel the driveway, nurse your own yo-yo injuries and you will be quizzed once a week as to the height of the heels I am wearing, based on their click-click-click overheard at 6am.
Oh, and the autumnal foliage is not "muted" here in NY...it just looks like crap. Not a good color-version this fall...I think we got too much freakin' rain.
I have a bandaid on my middle finger of my right hand and it's making it too hard to type. I shall leave on this note....
    Aloha. Ciao. Later, Dude.

  11. Well...being a HUGE cat lover, I cannot say enough about how CUTE these two are!

OMG...the one of McG in the Buddha pose is PRICELESS! I love big cats - how adorable he is. Looks like a teddy bear. I bet he's affectionate. I use to have two cats (male and female) who lived until they were 19 years old - I still miss them.

And your camera LENSE...holy cow...do they come any BIGGER???

Hey...your photos are AWESOME! Especially enjoyed the autumn ones. I agree with you, even here in the States, the fall colors are not what they use to be. In fact, Fall is not what it use to be - we barely even get it anymore.

Anyway, thanks for an enjoyable post, bud!

Hope you have a great weekend!

  13. AV You have been a little under the radar recently. I've missed you. Glad Meow, Meow, is OK, I hope it wasn't him that gave McG a rough time the other night. Now I know you think it's a long way from home but some cats to get about a bit and his fight fits the time frame....

How many Blogs are you running now my friend, they appear to be breeding. I find it hard to maintain one and that is only weekly.

Poor McG. Although he certainly poses well for the camera, a natural I'd say.

It's like being in a third world country at times, McG has begging down to a fine art. Unfortunately (or in health terms fortunately) for him we love him too much to give him all the food that he would like. He is this big on two small meals a day and no snacks, that we give him. (He is even fed separately from Mischief (in another room, to stop him eating her food) The vet delights in telling me that he is getting food from elsewhere but since he hardly leaves the house, except for short spells in the garden (I thought cats were meant to do their business in other peoples gardens – I wish someone would tell our two) and all our food gets put away – Yes he was not always a beggar he used to be a thief. He ate two donuts out of a bag, off the kitchen top, when he was younger. He would probably have got away with it if he had managed to hide the paper bag.

Is it a coincidence you're wearing an elephant polo shirt while trying to smuggle the beast?

A little harsh there Nikki, it is a L possibly an XL at most….For the avoidance of doubt (I know how literal you Americans can be) no elephants were hurt in the gaining of this shirt, I swapped it with one after a game. Before anyone can say it – Yes the elephant complained that my shirt was too baggy for him….

Yes it was very nice and I only lost consciousness twice while you kindly soothed my throat with your hands. I’m sorry that you hurt your finger while you were attempting to gouge my eyes out. I think it must be down to my sharp eye lashes.

35 seconds of concert I heard sounded FAB. That's what you say there, right? Actually, I don't care what you call it. It sounded sweet. THAT'S an American expression...live with it.
Glad you likes the VW footage – I would have posted more but it takes ages to load even a short clip and often the load crashes, it’s like it gets board and gives up – I had to keep shortening the clip – it started out at around 3 mins. At one point I was loading about 2 mins of negative footage but managed to fight back, so be grateful that you got 35 seconds

The photo of McG with his paw delicately under his chin as if to say, "Who...me? Yes, I know I'm the 'Cat's Meow'..." is beyond cute. Do you think he knows how cute he is? Mischief is scary and looks like he wants to beat the crap out of something.
Looks can be deceiving – Mischief only looks like she wants to beat up the world. In reality she is a bigger woose than McG. Other than the odd cuff in passing at the G Maister, she is normally to be found at the bottom of the deepest darkest cupboard, if anyone so much as looks at our door knocker in passing. If you look closely he has cought his paw in the bed cover, so not so much cute as clumsy

The Beast looks like something that started out as a camera and morphed into something...abnormal. Almost like those guys with ten million piercings all over their faces? With that much lens on a camera, I thought I'd see the nose hairs on Koenig. Good shots, though. Are you suggesting madam that I have Pimped my camera?

The lens in the picture is a 70-200 zoom. I saw a 800 lens the other day, I’m not sure I would be able to lift it….Thanks for the compliment on the pictures I’ll work on those nasal hair shots for you…

Yes McG is very loving, he gets very upset if he does not get any snuggles. If we settle on the couch, we get around 15 seconds before he arrives and demands a lap or two to sit on. So why no replacement moggies? A house without a cat is like a car without an engine, No Purr….

And your camera LENSE...holy cow...do they come any BIGGER??? They certainly do but I need to put myself through an intensive Body Building course and win vast amounts of money before I go in that direction

Candice welcome (I think, first comment?) to the BlackLOG. When we were away we had some friends feeding them. One day Mischief decided to stay in bed. Our friend took the food up to her. Took us a couple of days to get her back into our strictly no food in bed policy

26 pounds of cat - what's that in funny money - quick calculation, change into Dollars, run into Euro's and ending up with 11.79Kilos or 1.85 Stone. Wow that's large, are we underfeeding McG and starving Mischeif?. Has your cat got long legs - that’s McG's undoing if he had longer legs he would be able to carry off the extra pounds. .Please feel free to drop in any time and bring family, friends, pets even people you run into in the streets, once they get back on their feet (and try and be more careful next time).

  27. Hello Mr & Mrs B'

Very happy to hear that the other ginger member of the family is alive and well after his accidental fight with what he thought was a three legged octogenarian mouse, but actually turned out to be a feline with a bad temper.

I can't believe that McG would have the moxy or the energy to start a fight with anything other than a dog biscuit.

To change the subject me and my own feline with a bad temper have entered for our second triathlon May next year.

With this in mind could you please forward your unique transition training hint's and tips video file. Back to the McG saga, I have sent a recent picture of a rather bad tempered Hoary Marmot who wishes to meet up with McG and help him to seek and find the furry fiend that savaged the ginger one. So McG can make the required meeting please find the Marmots e-mail address nastyhoarymarmot@yahoo.ca

Poor McG!!! Is he feeling better now? I sure hope so! I LOVE all of the pictures of the kitties... so much cuteness! The photo of the bullrushes is also stunning.

Lots of people are commenting on the muted fall colours this year, from all around the world! Ours weren't as spectacular as they have been in past years, either.

Mother Nature is seriously slacking I guess! I'm not going to call her out on it though! Good thing Kathryn already did. hehehe

Mitch, how dare you imply that McG would only take on a dead mouse who’s fighting abilities are questionable at best. With age comes wisdom, but not evidently for everyone my 50+ friend (Please note I can continue to use this argument for at least another 5 ½ years) and guile in fighting can make up for a total lack of movement in those dead mice

I can't believe that McG would have the moxy or the energy to start a fight with anything other than a dog biscuit.
As for the fight with the dog biscuits, which he clearly won. If you must purchase superior English dog biscuits for Cadey I think you need to take better precaution than merely locking them in a suitcase, in a locked cupboard in our locked spare room. To a cat like McG that is counter mount to entrapment, besides half a tonne of ginger cat hair is circumstantial evidence at best or a good trade off depending on the DNA reports.

To change the subject me and my own feline with a bad temper have entered for our second triathlon May next year. With this in mind could you please forward your unique transition training hint's and tips video file.

Sorry to hear about Xenon, if it's any consolation he appears to have been recycled in our new double glazed windows and seems very content with his new position kipping on the window ledge, watching the world pass bye. Feel free to pop into the BlackLOG and visit him anytime....

It is amazing what people will do for there pets. About 5 years ago McG developed crystals in his urine which nearly put him on the extinct list. A weeks stay at the vets and a £500 bill had him back in his normal 95% sleep 5% eat routine. We were glad to pay as we got him back. Good luck with Scat cat and don't worry about McG he is back into hiding under the bed covers rather than fighting the world.... He's a sleeper not a fighter....

  35. The autumn colors are still muted in Iowa, but they are awesome in Montana (even though it has been snowing all day).

I'm glad that your cat is on the mend! Also, I'm glad you made it to the concert. My sister spent a year at Kings College, and then, a year at UCL.

  38. Oh my goodness all of these comments are sooo long, check out the great interaction at your blog land! Your cats are too cute, I enjoyed all of your photos. That concert looks great too, you are a busy lady!

P.S. you made me laugh with your music comment, I am so glad that you found a music player. I found that at a blog recently as well and it made my day! :) I like your tunes.

  39. PI See that's why you have to keep up with the comments as they are posted.

I on the other hand struggle to keep up with a weekly blog, yet alone daily like some of you.

Thanks for asking about McG he is back happy as ever just waiting to get told off by Mrs B for being on the wrong part of the bed....

  40. Oceandream welcome to the BlackBLOG and thanks for joining in the comments. I love them and find some of the most entertaining parts of a blog get lost down here. So many people don't bother with this section, they are sooo missing out. I have future plans to bring some of the comments to the surface....that will probably prove to be the end of the BlackLOG who knows....

Not sure where you got the 'busy Lady' comment from, I can't work out if I have forgotten about a sex change that I had or you are a southsayer and are predicting a future sex change that i'm going to have? It will no doubt amuse Mrs B...

Glad you like my tunes - frustrating that I can't put some of my own collection on, as a few of my favourites are missing but even so they have the Icicle Works - Does back flip. hits head on the kitchen counter.. regrets doing that, but still happy... Thank you once again for having the link on your site...

  41. Baahahaaaa... re the wrong part of the bed. I think that is a universal cat thing. Oreo insists on sleeping on top of my head... we argue about it nightly. ;o)

Keep on top of comments as they are posted...what a novel concept! :) I'm working on it! Soon (like... in January?) I won't be quite as busy at work and will have more time for the truly important things in life. :o)

Other than the V-Festival an outdoor event, trying to get an SLR into a gig is a nerve racking experience (Most venues have given up trying to stopping none SLR camera’s coming in, even though some of them have some excellent lens’s and good zooms. I still can’t believe the security guide let me in with The Beast) . The VW gig was brilliant because I managed to get a good spot on the balcony in a small venue. I doubt I will ever get such a good opportunity….
